Golf History – Women Golfers

The first ladies golf club is formed in 1867, The Ladies Club of St. Andrew’s in Scotland. But it wouldn’t be until the 1800s when women would start to play more. There are very few records of women golfers for a few hundred years after Mary Queen of Scots.

In 1811 the first known women’s golf tournament was held in Scotland at the Musselburgh Golf Club.

History of Women’s Golf Club

In 1894 a group of women from Morristown New Jersey opened a seven hole Golf Club due to the fact that they were not allowed to play on other local courses. This is where the first Women’s Golf Tournament in the United States is held. They made the mistake of allowing men to have memberships and a few years later after a man was elected president, it became a men’s golf club. Over the centuries women played golf helping mold the game to what it is today. The golf game did not become main stream among women in the United States until after World War II.

History of Women’s Golf Clothing

Over the years women golfers faced some attire issues in regards to being able to golf without obstruction from their clothing. Women still had to wear a skirt while golfing. Wearing a skirt could prove challenging as the club would sometimes get caught up, and their blouses were not loose fitting enough to properly swing the golf club right through.

In 1904 an improvement was made in ladies golf attire where it would be easier for them to focus more on their game, and not worry so much about their clothing restrictions affecting their swing. The raisable skirt was once again introduced; it had been popular with crocket players years before. The free stroke coat was newly introduced, which was designed so that women could move their arms more freely when swinging the golf club.

By the early 60s it became increasingly acceptable for women to wear sleeveless blouses and even bermuda shorts.

Most women’s clubs are now made an inch shorter in length then men’s golf clubs. The shafts in women’s clubs are also more flexible. This is due to the assumption that the women’s swing speed is slower than the men’s swing. This was not always the case though, the only difference you might of seen in the past was a club painted pink.

Ultimately as with most everything, women have come a long way and have definitely made their mark on the game of golf.
