Henna Tattoo Design – How to Make Henna Tattoos

Mehndi is a shrub-like plant from the Middle Eastern countries that is used in henna tattoos and in various henna tattoo designs. It is more commonly known as “Henna”, and the art of henna tattooing has been an ancient tradition of the Middle Eastern culture. In places like India, Pakistan, Sudan and Egypt, it has been a tradition and now a fashion everywhere.

The henna or mehndi leaves are used in body painting or what we call henna tattoo or temporary tattoo. People today prefer to use it because it is cheaper, simpler and you can even make one and apply them yourself. The henna leaves are ground and powdered and converted into a paste, then applied in various body parts such as; hands, legs, feet, arms, ankles, neck, back, stomach and even in toe and finger nails and in other parts of the body where you want them most.

Because henna tattooing has become a fashion, many vendors now made henna in different colors, but studies showed that it is not safe. When other dyes, chemicals, or substances are added to henna to change its color, there are some kind of chemical reactions that cause skin irritations, which can be mild to severe in some cases. Therefore, it is advisable to use henna in its pure and uncolored form.

Anyone can use henna and create and experiment with any design or you can choose one as there are many henna tattoo design books or catalogs available in the market. Some people use the ready-made henna in tubes in the market, but many still prefer to mix it in their own way.

Surprisingly, it gives better results. There are actually henna recipes, designs and guides on the market that can help you make the henna paste and apply them yourself. If you want to experience making one for yourself, here is a simple and effective recipe and procedure that will guide you through the process and how to use it.

First you need:

1 and 1/4 cups dry and sifted henna powder

2 packs of instant coffee singles

1 and 1/4 dl water

2 tbsp lemon juice (fresh)

5 drops of eucalyptus oil

5 drops of fatty oil

Procedures for mixing the henna paste.

1. Boil instant coffee and water down to 3/4 cup dark liquid.

2. Mix enough coffee (dark liquid) into the henna powder to create a thick paste. Keep mixing until well combined.

3. Add lemon juice, eucalyptus and cloves. Mix until well combined. Just a little reminder though, the paste must not be too watery or you will need to add more henna powder. It should not be too thick, or you will have to add a little more of the dark liquid, otherwise plain water will do. Finally, let the mixture cool for about 2 hours before using. The measurement only applies to a small portion of henna paste. If you plan to spend more, you can do so by doubling the measurements. Unused henna paste can also be stored for later use, provided it is sealed. It can last for two weeks if stored in a refrigerator and can last for two months if stored frozen.

How to apply the henna paste?

When applying the henna paste, you can choose between using a toothpick, squeeze bottle or a cone. You can buy or make your own using available material that can be made that way. Then you have to decide on the design. There are different henna tattoo designs sets available in the market. It comes with a sample design and a stencil.

However, you can do it your way. Create your own design and don’t need fancy stencils and stuff, do it freehand! After application, leave it until the paste dries. This may take longer than the application. It can take hours and when it is finally dry; you will see the fine results you have just done. Cool! The tattoo can last for 4 to 6 weeks depending on how you care for it.

So the hard work, handiwork and time spent is worth it!
