It’s A Jersey Thing: 5 Unconventional Hockey Jersey Styles
As some of us know as hockey fans, we definitely have our favorite team and we definitely have our favorite jersey.
How some of us look at or use our jerseys are sometimes very different from each other.
Some of us are very happy just to get our favorite team’s home jersey without a name on the back. They’re just showing support for the team they’re rooting for. Some of us want the authentic cut jersey that the players wear on the ice; that is if you are a hardcore fan.
It doesn’t matter how you wear it, it doesn’t matter when you wear it, all that matters is that you do it for the game you love and nothing else.
Sometimes you might see a jersey and think; “Hey, that’s an interesting design.” Someone can post a picture of it on the internet and it can get some buzz on social media. Some of you might stop scrolling and take a good look at it and give it a quick like. Some of you might want to look into it a little more and find out that the shirts are for a charity. Some of these jersey designs are cool and some are downright ridiculous, but it’s worth a good laugh or an amazing reaction. Many of these jerseys are made for promotional purposes and auctioned off for charity, just another reason why hockey is one of the greatest sports on earth. Sometimes, however, the reason goes deeper and beyond the colors of the shirt. There is definitely cultural symbolism with some of these jerseys. Some of them have caused quite a bit of controversy.
Military inspired camouflage shirts:
Many NHL teams participate in wearing these military-inspired jerseys during warmups to support and recognize the national military. Fans have polarizing views on these jerseys, but they’re not meant to promote style, they’re to promote a good cause. Some people have said that these jerseys don’t serve a purpose and don’t help the military, BUT if you care about how it helps the military, then you need to know where your money is going before you buy military inspired merchandise.
The MSE (Monumental Sports & Entertainment) Foundation recently raised $46,000 during a Washington Capitals home game on February 5, 2016 by auctioning military-inspired Washington Capitals jerseys. The funds acquired are used to help family members of soldiers serving in the military, soldiers with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and war amputees. The shirts were signed and sold during the event. Not only were these jerseys sold to raise money; equipment such as pucks, helmets, sticks and more were also sold to raise funds for this honorable cause.
It is mostly only at these private auctions where money is raised for this kind of charity. Most official sports stores that offer military camouflage jerseys are sold for profit only, unless otherwise stated that the proceeds from each sale go to a charity. Some retail stores sell these jerseys, but some don’t because they don’t want a controversial image of using military fashion to cash in on a quick profit. It’s not just jerseys where the camouflage design is used, it’s also on hats, toques and shirts. Soldiers who have served in the military do not like the fact that retail stores use the military image for profit because it is a weak expression of support for the military, plus the military image is exploited for promotional purposes so that companies can make money.
Star Wars Themed Shirts:
It’s easy to admit that these jerseys are ‘out-of-the-box’ in terms of jersey design. For Star Wars fans who love hockey, they are some of the most epic jersey designs ever. The Vancouver Giants and Saskatoon Blades of the WHL (Western Hockey League) each had a Star Wars night in honor of the most successful box office of 2015; Star Wars – The Force Awakens.
Star Wars Night for the Saskatoon Blades was held on November 28, 2015 and the entire Saskatoon Blades team wore these jerseys for their home game against the Edmonton Oil Kings. The jerseys were not only intended to bring nerds to hockey games, but it was for charity. The jerseys worn by the players were signed by the players and auctioned off after the match. Proceeds from the auction went to the Food Banks of Saskatchewan.
The Vancouver Giants also had their own version of these beautiful Star Wars jerseys, but unlike the Blades, the Giants went to the “dark side”. The Giants wore them to their December 4, 2015 home game against the Kootenay Ice. Like what the Blades did, the Giants team also signed those jerseys and auctioned them off for charity. Proceeds went to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
LA Dodgers Pride Night Jerseys:
The Los Angeles Kings have a ‘Dodgers Pride Night’ once a year. season. It is based on the partnership agreement between the Los Angeles Kings and the Los Angeles Dodgers, a Major League Baseball team. It’s as much a promotion as it is a charity for both major sports teams. Fans who go to this annual event not only watch the game, but get an LA Kings themed baseball and a chance to win prizes at the game.
The Dodger’s inspired hockey jerseys worn for warmups were signed and auctioned after the game. The proceeds went to the Kings Care Foundation.
Flint Firebirds “Tropics” Jerseys:
Based on the 2008 blockbuster Semi-Pro, these jerseys were a take from the Flint Tropics, the name of the basketball team in the movie. Since it’s the Flint Firebirds we’re talking about here, wouldn’t it be handy to have the “Jackie Moon” endorsed Flint Tropic hockey jerseys for a promotional event?
That’s exactly what the Flint Firebirds did when they hosted a “Flint Tropics Night” in Flint, Michigan. The Firebirds hosted the Owen Sound Attack on February 13, 2016 for the event. It was a big highlight for the Firebirds as they had a terrible season with numerous ownership disputes and a lot of lost games. The jerseys were auctioned off after the game for charity and it was a night where the Firebirds and the fans had fun regardless of the outcome of the game.
St. Patty Day Hockey Jerseys:
Like the military shirts, St. The Patty Day jerseys of many NHL teams for pregame warmups, but without controversy. It’s a great promo as St. Patty’s day is very popular, and if you didn’t already guess, the pregame warmup jerseys are signed and auctioned off for charity by many teams. Whether it is an NHL team or a junior league team participating in this, it is a very popular event in Canada and the United States. It always produces great results because it’s a good excuse to celebrate spring and a good reason to order a few pints of Guinness for yourself and your friends.
How could anyone hate St. Patrick’s Day?
