Pop Art – Painting Live Do’s and Don’ts

Want to paint in front of an audience at an event or venue? If you want to be particularly successful, there are a few things to consider and prepare before you pack your paintbrushes and canvas and hit the stage.

For the last eight years I have been painting full time. Pop art, modern wall art, abstract, figurative, surrealism, stencil art, murals and bonsai geisha art are the styles I specialize in. I started my career in San Francisco and moved to Arizona. When I first arrived in Arizona, I was fully committed to the live art scene, doing live painting five nights a week at various venues such as concerts, nightclubs, charity events, private parties, galleries and festivals. During that time, I learned what to do and what not to do to get the most out of my live painting experience. Branding and marketing the art, selling the art, and enjoying the overall experience are my three main goals when doing live painting.

Branding and marketing my art as a performing artist is really about branding and marketing myself. Because my art is an extension of me. Art speaks for itself, but I quickly learned that to be taken seriously and to be successful, I had to demonstrate professional conduct. It reveals some of the many ways.

One way is to work with a professional promoter who will properly represent you and promote your art. Professional promoters will be happy to include your name and a link to their website in their promotional materials. When working with other professionals, be aware of what they expect from you too. So be prepared and always have your business card handy. Also, make sure all promotional materials such as press kits, websites, blogs, brochures, flyers are organized and kept up to date.

Another rule of thumb is to check out the venue before playing there. It’s best to visit during performance times to check the atmosphere. Do you have enough lighting? If you must bring lights, make sure they are not too much or too little. Please check with management where the performance area will be located prior to your visit. If the venue is dark while you are painting, make sure there is an electrical outlet nearby. Choose a location where you can be in front of your audience, but not in a high traffic zone. We do not recommend installing it near the dance floor. People will bump into you all night, especially at venues that serve alcohol. Finally, when it comes to location, consider how much space you have available, think about the size of your canvas, the size of your aisles, where you will put your supplies, and so on.

When visiting in advance, consider who the patrons of the show are and then start thinking about what to draw. You should always plan the execution of your piece in advance so that the performance looks effortless. If you are a beginner, you may need to practice painting at home beforehand to determine the supplies you need, how long it will take, and/or any other unforeseen obstacles in the creation process.

I’ve learned the hard way that who I perform with affects my success. Simply put, if he’s working with other performing artists, make sure they’re quality artists. If you work with an unskilled or unprofessional artist, people may associate you with them and devalue your services. but did not leave the filth behind.

Professionalism is established not only before the event, but also during the performance. Be careful from the moment you step into the venue. You are not just painting, you are acting. Show up early and say hello to management. Make sure the workspace is still available. In some cases, the situation can change from day to day. When setting up, do it in an orderly manner and keep the area tidy. It is not uncommon for people to approach you while you are painting. Some become potential customers, while others are too drunk to do anything. Avoid drinking alcohol if possible. That way, you can stay calm and focus on painting and discovering potential clients.

If someone wants a painting and has cash, let them buy it. Remember you are there to sell paintings. If you only have a portion of the cash, take cash as a down payment, get your contact information, and plan a time to collect the remaining amount. Unfortunately when people say they’ll be back at the end of the night or say they don’t have an ATM card, I can only assume they won’t be back. But on the bright side, if he’s painting three to five times a week in a legitimate location, there’s no reason why he can’t sell his work and make a profit.

Finally, at the end of the night, be sure to clean up your area and return it to its original condition, and don’t forget to thank the manager before you leave.

Live painting is a great way to make money, brand yourself, meet new interesting people and enjoy life. The places I like to hang out tend to suit people who like my art. Establishing a reputation with professional live art performances will make people treat you like a local celebrity, boost sales and allow you to have fun while creating impressive work!
