Braganza House – Stranded in Time in Goa

With an address that hasn’t changed in over 350 years, Braganza House can be a little tricky to find. Traveling further south from Panjim, leaving the bustling town behind and en route to the highway leading to Mangalore, the journey to Braganza House is a drive through lush countryside at some turns. Maps, travel guides, GPS, and classic directions tend to differ like chalk and cheese, and it takes time to reach Chador, a small town 15 kilometers south of Madgaon, Goa.

Details of Braganza House

Braganza House, occupied by Chandor, is a silent witness to times that are no longer the same. Once upon a time it would have been the grandest address in all of Goa. Today it is just a relic. Spread over one acre, Braganza House is divided into two equal wings. Inherited by two sisters in the family who named the wings after their husbands, the west wing belongs to the Menenzes-Braganza tree and the east wing is home to the Braganza-Pereira family. This separation took place many generations after the death of his AFS Braganza Pereria, who was gifted this land by the King of Portugal.

One of the last remnants of the dying Goan-Portuguese style of architecture, the Braganza House is not Aida de Menezes’ own. The 94-year-old matriarch of the Menezes-Braganza family remembers it, sitting quietly in one of her 28 balcony windows on the first floor. Her son stayed in Brazil for several years and visited her regularly. Most days she sits there waiting for visitors to call and perhaps head to visit her home. Offering a piece of her family’s story, Aida’s home can be strolled through the centuries for visitors to help preserve her dying legacy.

The history of Braganza reflects the rise and fall of Goa, Portugal. They arose after the conversion of wealthy Hindu families in the area after the arrival of the Jesuit mission in Goa around the mid-16th century. During his next 300 years, the family prospered to unprecedented heights. Aida’s great-grandfather, Francis Xavier Braganza, was knighted by Ferdinand II in 1848 and was given royal service.

Holding on to family memories and almost invisible pride, Aida, who rarely speaks, is forced to show off her family history. Walking through her rooms and hallways with the help of Judith, who never mentioned her relationship with Aida, the echoes of her once glorious past are still striking. Silent for centuries, the artifact appears derelict and lost, but must have been illuminated at one time.

Braganza House has grown to be Chandor’s largest address. The 110-meter-long Francis Xavier Braganza house was built in his three stages and has relics collected from around the world. Each room has its own unique character: a majestic ballroom, a dining hall that can hold an entire town, Goa’s largest private library with over 5000 books, many of which are rare first editions. Carved wooden rosewood and teak furniture, some hundreds of years old, Portuguese tiles, Belgian crystal chandeliers, Italian colored glass windows, oyster shells and more. is no problem.

The Dark Ages of the Braganza Family

Having no heirs, Francisco Xavier left everything to his grandson Luis de Menezes Braganza. A man of words, Luis took his maternal name and quite bravely opposed the Portuguese. By the turn of the 19th century, Ruiz began writing the first Portuguese-language newspaper in Goa called O Heraldo, followed by four more publications. His fierce opposition to the Portuguese angered Salazar, shut down the press, and afflicted his family.

A product of Portuguese rule in Goa, Braganza became disillusioned with his home country. Lewis now wanted Goa’s autonomy, and after his death in 1938, his family supported its liberation by India. However, from 1947 until liberation, the family was forced to abandon Goa to avoid the Portuguese. The time spent away from home proved to be too much for the mansion, and it fell into disrepair from which it never really recovered.

A teary-eyed Judith looks over her shoulder at Aida as she sits in the sun and meditates. Aida recalls years later from her tumultuous time trying to restore the glory of her Braganza family. After liberation they depended on income from their land, which was also lost as a result of the 1962 land reform.

It took Aida a few years to calm her children down and in the early 1980s she decided to restore the beauty and splendor of her ancestral home. Today, her two members of the family occupy her two wings, both of which have visitors helping them maintain the home. It’s sad to see it almost scuttled between its two wings to attract the attention of tourists and tourists.

Saying no to the other person in the middle is even sadder.
