10. Animal fat added.

Many of these factory farmed animals are kept in such a small space that they are forced to stand in their own feces. To prevent the animals from getting sick in these conditions, they are pumped full of antibiotics which end up in our food. We often don’t want to worry much about the ingredients used in snacks. Just like we think KFC barbecue and fries are delicious… but we don’t think the chicken used was healthy or not. These facts not only make us stop eating junk food but also make us vegetarian by choice. Many new diseases such as bird flu, swine flu are caused by consuming such infected meat.

We are left in the lurch, between these binaries not knowing what to follow but harboring a desire to follow at least one of them. All the while we don’t realize that both are harmful to our health and well-being.

In the age of burgers and fries, fitness is the cherished enemy. A survey conducted by TOI in January 2015 concluded that 10% of children in government schools were obese, a stark contrast to 25% from private schools.

Setting aside the alarming percentage of unhealthy children in both these cases, we must be aware of the economic factor. There have been shocking studies that have brought out the deplorable state of the food served to students in government schools, leading to malnutrition and even diseases in some cases.

How blind are we to this obvious divide? Or are we just too wrapped up in our lives to worry about anything that might cause us trouble? Do we use more, do we eat more because we have more, or is it just a vicious cycle? Don’t we as citizens have the moral responsibility to reduce our consumption in the other parts of society’s interest, if not donate?

An occasional treat is all well and good, but it shouldn’t become the norm. Today’s mantra seems to be “I have, want to spend”. Where does it take us? If not for society’s sake, we must reduce our material consumption and do ourselves a favor. If our day is incomplete without a visit to a nearby Starbucks, it’s time to reevaluate our choices and change for the better.

Simply whipping up witty one-liners on Facebook or a hashtag on Twitter won’t help one bit. We need to get out of the comfort of our homes to create change for this generation and the next.
